Qatar is a country under construction. With roads, buildings, metro stations, stadiums, hotels, and even more malls currently in varying stages of assembly, it's easy to see how integral the construction industry has become to the country.
By and large, construction companies are responsible for executing the building, infrastructure, and interior from a model or drawing created by an architectural firm and/or a civil engineer. Construction companies come onboard at the beginning stages of the project, where they can help companies balance form and function, aesthetics and budget, to a satisfactory outcome.
The work begins when companies or government organisations put out a tender. This can cover anything from buildings to scaffolding to roadworks. Construction companies would typicall receive the tender bid documents including the already prepared design drawings and Bill of Quantities. Next, staff from the company's tender division get to work on estimating the quantities of materials, manpower, equipments & machineries required to complete the project. Then sundries, contingencies and profits are incorporated to arrive at the final cost the company intends on charging the client. This, along with a full proposal is then submitted to the client, along with whatever other documents are specified in the tender document. If the construction company happen to comply with all the requirements and their quoted amount is least among other tenderers, they are then awarded the job and the real work begins.
The next steps involve the company's procurement team who begins purchases the materials required for the projects and sends them to the construction site. The site team then takes over and begins executing the design. The team is often comprised of different professionals - civil engineers, architecture, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers - all working in tandem to create the final product. The team is responsible for planning the day-to-day work scheduled, manage manpower, material, machinery and manpower, and execute the project on time and under budget.
When the project reaches certain important stages, billing engineer or the company's accounts department invoices to the client in accordance with pre-agreed terms and conditions. If the client is satisfied that the claim is valid, the company gets paid. This continues until all work is complete. On completion, the construction company then begins the handover process, where the client undertakes a thorough inspection of the build and evaluates whether it's fit for occupation.
